HD Imaging
HD Imaging is a proprietary imaging format developed by Essen specifically for IncuCyte™. HD is a phase imaging technique which is largely insensitive to fluid-meniscus artifacts. HD imagery looks a little different than standard phase contrast imagery as shown in the accompanying images. In general, HD shows more cell detail and less of a halo, but the biggest difference is that the cells that have rounded up appear dark, as opposed to bright.

High- contrast phase imaging in microplates
HD Imaging was developed in response to the poor image quality inherent with traditional phase contrast optics in 96 and 384-well microplates. The poor quality is due to aberrations produced by the fluid-meniscus. HD imaging is largely insensitive to fluid-meniscus artifacts.
HD enables high-contrast, non-labeled imaging in microplates providing morphological information difficult to attain with fluorescent-only imaging. Essen is developing microplate-based kinetic imaging assays based on this technology.
