BioLevitator 3D Cell Culture System

BioLevitator 3D Cell Culture System

The BioLevitator™ is a benchtop incubator and bioreactor hybrid for up to four 50 ml high density 3D cultures. It utilizes the GEM™ technology which is based on specific magnetic microcarriers to which adherent cells attach.

By a switchable magnetic mechanism and smooth movement of the flasks the GEMs are kept in a floating state with the freedom to move through the entire flask space during growth, i.e. 3D cell culture. With the BioLevitator™, a number of procedures and equipment are eliminated from the classical cell culture workflow significantly simplifying and shortening the entire procedure.

Features and Benefits

  • HD cell culture proven for a variety of adherent cell types, e.g. established cell lines as well as primary cells and stem cells
  • streamlined workflow and reduced hands-on time: easy media exchange, washing and harvesting of cells
  • elimination of manual working steps and peripheral instruments like centrifuges and incubators
  • absolutely reproducible growth conditions for consistent experiments
  • fully integrated environmental control (e.g. CO2, temperature)
  • online measurement of relevant culture parameters (e.g. cell density, pH)
  • stand-alone solution operated by a large touchscreen display
  • easily integrated in Hamilton’s robotic platforms

GEM™ Technology

  • bead diameter between 75 and 150 µm
  • increased adherent surface to volume ratio compared with standard cell culture dishes
  • optically clear and non-autofluorescent – no interference with fluorescent and non-fluorescent imaging assays
  • compressible and porous alginate core enhancing cell polarity and increasing in vivo like cell metabolism
  • thin gelatine coating supporting the attachment of a wide range of cell types
  • magnetic beads included in the alginate core for maneuvering of the GEM™s during media change, washing and harvesting
